Could someone explain this Thomas Hardy allusion to Byron and Shelley in Tess of the D'urbervilles?

The context is that Tess is describing her love for Angel and then it is said "Though not cold natured, he was rather bright than hot, less Byronic than Shelleyan; could love desperately, but with a love more especially inclined to the imaginative and ethereal
