File Hippo and antivirus software help?

We just found an "older" laptop today that we plan on allowing family friends to borrow. However, there's only expired anti virus software on the computer, so it's sort of vulnerable. I have heard of File hippo in the past, and i'm just wondering: is it reliable for downloading an anti virus program from? If so, which one do you recommend?
